Getting Ready For The Big Day!

by Leanna Renee Hieber

The date is set. The gown has arrived. The invitations have been sent... The Big Day is almost here!

Nope. I'm not talking about getting married. Yet. But it feels like it. Or like I'm about to have a baby. I am, of sorts. I'm talking about release day for my debut in mass-market paperback. 8/25... Mark your calendars, something Strangely Beautiful is about to begin...
What fortune awaited sweet, timid Percy Parker at Athens Academy? Considering how few of Queen Victoria’s Londoners knew of it, the great Romanesque fortress was dreadfully imposing, and little could Percy guess what lay inside. She had never met the powerful and mysterious Professor Alexi Rychman, knew nothing of the growing shadow, the Ripper and other supernatural terrors against which his coterie stood guard. She knew simply that she was different, haunted, with her snow-white hair, pearlescent skin and uncanny gifts. But this arched stone doorway offered a portal to a new life, an education far from the convent—and an invitation to an intimate yet dangerous dance at the threshold of life and death...

Okay, so let's talk about what's going down in the coming months.
I really do have a gown. For my release party. From one of my favourite clothiers, Gallery Serpentine:

Isn't it beautiful? Since my story is set in 1888, I've dreamed of the day I could justify the expense of this skirt. (FYI that's been a 9 year dream - it's worth the wait...)

I'm slammed with activity this month and next. A taste:

-
- Teaching a workshop at the Central Ohio Fiction Writers Conference
-
- Oh, and then writing the next books in the series... *I make a dazed face*
I think I breathe again in October. Depends on if I go to World Fantasy Con or not... Oh, and there's the NJRWA Conference...

Way more than a full time job, this. But this book is my baby, one of those really special projects. I want to scream from the rafters about it, so thankfully I've a lot of energy to throw into it. I hope all this ends up selling books. ;)

And so, dear reader, tell me your tales of promo. Your triumphs, your woes, your fears, your joys... What am I missing? What's your favourite promo trick? Do you get overwhelmed? Do tell, do tell...

  1. WOW! gorgeous dress! and you must post a picture of your hat! I wish I could attend your event at Lady Jane's Salon. I so love the concept of doing romance novel readings! What fun! Leanna it sounds like you've got the all the bases covered with promotions! Good for you! Here's a fun idea that I did when I worked for a film production company. We screened a movie at the Palm Springs International Film Festival (what a thrill that was! and what an amazing fest!) The movie was called "House of Luk" and it followed the lives of three characters who frequented a Chinese restaurant. So I had the idea to get fortune cookies custom-made with a message (it was info about the movie) to hand out at the end of the movie to all the attendees. They were a big hit! It wasn't too expensive and it was a nice touch.

  3. We'd like to help boost your launch. We operate Storycasting.com, the premier "fantasy casting" website. We have already placed Strangely Beautiful on our website, here: http://tinyurl.com/lcb6n4, so you can "cast" your work (as over 100 authors have done), using current film/TV stars. Then let your fans help you "cast the movie". Free and non-spamming. Tell your publisher and let's work together - 25-30% of readers already cast their favorite fiction, why not start your launch with some movie fun and celebrity buzz?

  4. I'm so looking forward to your release, Leanna! It sounds like a great read. I'm just starting out, so I don't know what promo efforts are effective yet. You sound like you're off to a great start.
I agree with Joanna - really great dress! Perfect for the occasion. Hope you make it to the states for signings.

  5. Leanna, great dress. I can't wait for the book. It seems that your days are filled. I haven't reach the step where publicity is needed but this post shows that the work doesn't end with the book being published.

  6. Hey friends! Thanks for stopping by.

Joanna, that is a nice touch, little things referential to the work can be fun.

Lis, thank you! I can't wait to give you a big congratulatory hug on your sale in person! I'm SO psyched for you!

    Jeff,
Sounds cool I'll check you out, thanks!

    Thanks Cate!
Where are you based? I'm based in NYC and I'll be doing some stuff here and in Ohio. As for promo stuff, just keep asking fellow authors and seeing what they're doing. If something they're doing resonates with you, do it. We can't do every promo opportunity in the world, we should do the ones we think are fun - because it's such a huge time committment.

Mageela! *hugs* You are so right, the work has only just begun. But since we love writing, we love to talk about it, right? That's really all this is, finding ways to have a discussion about the work. But it is work in and of itself. :)

    Blessings!

The gown is to die for! OMG!! Gorgeous.

Good for you! Wishing you much success and many, many sales.

  8. SO exciting, Leanna! I'll be haunting your online book tour...

Your first excerpt is really wonderful. Great intro to the mysterious Alexi.

And to say I love your Release Day dress is to put it mildly.
