The Easter Bunny Blues

Contrary to popular fiction, there is more than one Easter Bunny.

In fact there are three.  There’s Peter, Paul and your token female, Penelope.  All three want to throw in the towel on the whole Easter Bunny business.  After all, who really cares anymore if there’s an Easter Bunny as long as there’s an Easter egg hunt?  The whole marketing campaign behind the egg thing is not about the long-in-the-tooth threesome, but about another kind of tooth.  A sweet tooth.

A few years back Peter convinced the other two bunnies to hold a strategic planning meeting where they discussed the relevance of their hard won position in today’s world.

Should they expand their operation by becoming more like Santa Claus and ride an activity appropriate conveyance as they hid the eggs?  What about an advertising campaign around an egg-mobile complete with junior bunnies to pull the conveyance?  They would then have a ready-made group of potential candidates to take their job when they retired. And even more to the point, they’d have underlings to add grandeur to their exalted position as the Easter Bunny Trio.

Could they raise their image by taking to the skies like Santa?  Or should they join the paranormal phenomenon and become super glider bunnies traveling the underworld at light speed?
Like all strategic planning sessions, many recommendations were made, including but not limited to changing the Easter egg hunt into a Barbie doll hunt, and cross marketing with Barbie’s handlers; hiring more hens to lay more eggs and promote an egg hunt twice yearly not just on Easter.

Overhaul the Easter Bunny’s wardrobe by hiring Lady GaGa to oversee the selection; retire the existing three with a huge pension and forget the whole Easter Bunny thing.

As of this moment, there has been no decision on what to do about the Easter Bunny, and once again the dear old bunnies are out there looking for fresh places to hide eggs.  If you have suggestions on egg hiding locales, or if you’d like to volunteer to drive the trio around, please sign up here.

In the meantime,

Stella

  1. A different wrinkle on the whole Easter egg business--one that has nothing to do with bunnies. I'm Stella's editor at Harlequin and the building across from ours in Don Mills (a suburb of Toronto)is currently home to a pair of Peregrine Falcons. This has occasioned huge interest from media, bird lovers--and all of us at Harlequin. The two birds, Quest (the young female, born in New York) and Kendal (the male, born in downtown Toronto) have taken up residence on a window ledge. Quest has just laid their second egg. The first one fell off (was pushed? My colleague Dianne Moggy saw it happen) and shattered on the concrete below. Yesterday there was another egg, and now members of the Pergrine Falcon Foundation have set up a nesting box--and Quest is in it, with her egg. Big news, good news! This one may survive and hatch!

So, Happy Easter, Quest, Kendal and baby.

  3. Dear Paula,
This is great news for the Peregrines. I've been a bird watcher for years, and I love the Peregrines. They have begun to re-inhabit the Bay of Fundy area which is so wonderful to see. Hope your Toronto pair are successful because then you will all be able to enjoy future nestings. These are incredible birds.
    Thanks so much.

  4. Dear Anne, Yes, the old gentleman has had a checkered history. Well, who could blame him after all?

  5. Hi Stella! Cute, cute scenario - I'm thinking whoever originally came up with the idea of a bunny who lays eggs might have been a few cards short of a full deck! Really funny when you think about it. You might be right - it could be time to retire the old guy and bring on a new identity! Good to see you on here this weekend. Happy Easter to you and yours! Loine

  6. I grew up thinking not that the Easter Rabbit layed the eggs, but that he decorated them. He had a workshop down in the woods by the brook at the back of our farm; it had a work bench with paint brushes and cake decorators that he used to make flowers to decorate the eggs with. Every spring, I would spend hours trying to find the workshop and catch him in the act of decorating. I had great ideas about what a chocolate marshmallow Easter egg OUGHT to look like and I wanted to get those ideas to him before he finished off all the eggs. Now that I look back on it, I realize that I believed in the Easter Rabbit long after I believed in Santa Claus. With an imagination like that, is it any wonder I write?

  8. 'Overhaul the Easter Bunny’s wardrobe by hiring Lady GaGa to oversee the selection' - LOL, Stella!

Cool story about the falcons, Paula - I'm currently writing a dark fantasy that features a falconer, his apprentice and of course falcons. I'm now exceedingly fond of these amazing birds.

  9. I'm just trying to imagine Easter Bunny a la GaGa - and hoping it involves chocolate! Very fun post, Ruth.

Paula - glad to hear that Quest is persevering and the PFF are looking after her egg.

Julia - your book premise sounds wonderful! Happy Easter, all!

  10. Hi Loine and thank you so much. Yes, the bunny may have seen better days, but who would take his place? Or could we go without a bunny or eggs even?

  12. Hi Doris,
So glad to hear that your computer skills are improving. Could you maybe help me figure out how to keep from forgetting my password? Right now I'm using an old notebook for my passwords, but how clunky is that?

  13. Hi Julia,
Don't you think LG is the perfect lady to overhaul a wardrobe? And what about the bunny hair, or bunny bun?

  14. Hi Pam,
A la GaGa? Love it! Do you suppose you could put a hare in one of your heinous crimes? Is there not room for a crossover there of sorts?

  15. Stella, I have to tell you that you crack me up every single time I read one of your blogs. You should seriously think of doing a stand-up routine!

  16. Hi Stella!

Loved the humor, as usual, but leave the poor bunny alone! No Lady G! My kinds still love the fluffy bunnies. If there was a meat suit involved we would all flee, screaming!

Really though, although my kids are past the age of believing, we still love the silliness of the holiday, and the wonder of waking to a filled Easter Basket. They still do an egg hunt, and we still paint a few eggs every spring. It's a part of the new season and a goodbye to the cold winter.

  17. Oh, Kate,
Thank you SO much! I can stand up, but I'm not sure I can be funny in that position. No blood to the brain thingy. And I do most of my writing half-reclining. So great to hear from you. Hope to see you in New York.

  18. Dear Lilly,
Yeah, no more bashing the bunny....my granddaughter is madly boiling eggs this morning for an egg painting session this afternoon at her friend Oskar's house.
I'd paint a few eggs myself IF I had even an inkling of painting talent.

  19. Hi Ruth,I love your Easter Bunny Story! I'm going hunting for the Bunny today at Walmart. I remember my password because I only have one for everything, and it's something I do every day kind of things, like- '' get out off bed''- ''let's eat''- ''never too late''- ''move over''- and I add my favorite # to it.It works for me, I've got that memory thing, thanks for being my wonderful and trusting friend, Doris

Have a great day. Doris
