The Dark Side of Sexy

Brooding. Dangerous. Dark. Devoted.
by Kellyann Zuzulo

He's dark and brooding. Dangerous and hot tempered. He has passions that, at first, you're not sure you want to know about. But you just can't resist. Can't resist pursuing, delving, returning...reading. Yes, reading. These traits are some of the same that romance readers just can't seem to get enough of in their favorite paranormal archetypes. Vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, ghosts, angels, demons and, of course, genies. Perhaps it's a reflection of uncertain times, of a harder edge to daily struggles. Yet, the dark hero is not a new phenomenon. Despite the spanking success of the Shades of Gray trilogy with its own troubled and intense hero, the desire for a multi-layered brooding alpha male is not new. Think Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights or Bram Stoker's Dracula (though he's a little pale for the typical alpha male). One of my favorites is the elusive, frightening, yet oddly appealing Barrons in Karen Marie Moning's Fever series. But just like those renegade rogues and rascals we love to love, there's a soft skin over hard muscle. Because even the most cynical and dangerous hero would do anything for love.

What's a one-word trait that you look for in a hero?

Best Wishes,
