GRAFFITI ART MEMORIES

by Joanna D'Angelo

In my post yesterday I wrote about the big brouhaha when the University of Ottawa bungled Ann Coulter's appearance in Ottawa back in March.

It got me reminiscing about my days in university. I studied journalism at Carleton University in Ottawa. Carleton has a beautiful campus - surrounded by water -  one side the Rideau Canal and on the other the Rideau River. It kind of exists on its own little island.

One of the things that I have always liked about Carleton is its tunnel system - that enables you to go from building to building without venturing outside. Cones in handy on those stormy winter days.  But it was also easier for us journalism students who were always lugging equipment around to go through the tunnels. Why? Try pulling a huge lighting kit behind you over bumpy pavement or through construction zones. And there was/is always construction going on at Carleton. Bonus! We'd sometimes run into nice security or maintenance people who would give us a lift to our destination in their tunnel carts. I think some of my fellow students once did a story about tunnel carts for our TV news class just so they could ride around in them.

The downside about the tunnels is that they are kind of creepy to walk through at night or on days when there isn't much student traffic - because of all the echoing creaks/groans/clanks of pipes/furnace etc... They can also be unsafe  - esp. for women, so we were always cautious.

But one of my favourite aspects of the tunnels was the graffiti art on the walls.  Some of it had been there for years but every year or so you'd see something new.  So in the interest of my nostalgic musings, I thought I'd post some pics of some of the Carleton tunnel graffiti art that I found on flickr photographed by ijulia:

  19. Carleton isn't *surrounded* by water. The Rideau Canal is to the west, the river to the south. How is that "surrounded"? I graduated from Carleton with a BJ (Hons) but probably before you did, back when they taught geography and precision in language.
