If You Could Only Have Three TV Networks, What Would They Be?

Today we are thrilled to welcome New York Times and USA Today best selling author Susan Mallery to popculturedivas!

Susan's new release CHASING PERFECT was released last week and judging from her track record it's sure to be a hit! Susan has written more than 100 romance and women's fiction novels. GULP! She has won many awards, including the prestigious National Reader’s Choice Award. Susan's books have been named to the Top 10 Romance Novels lists of 2007, 2008, and 2009 by Booklist, a publication of the American Library Association, and she was the only author on the list all three years. Oh, by the way Susan also has a Masters in Writing Popular Fiction. Smarty pants! ;)

Welcome Susan!

Thanks Joanna! So great to be here with the popculturedivas...

I have a dirty little secret: I don’t like TV that’s good for me. I don’t mind learning something from a TV show, but I don’t seek it out. I really just want to be entertained. Morning news shows are great because they flit from topic to topic, giving you just enough news to make you feel like a good citizen, and then sprinkling in fun stuff for dessert. Same thing with Oprah. (Ellen’s show is all dessert, so I love her best of all!)

I just finished a book tour to promote CHASING PERFECT, the first book of my new series, Fool’s Gold romances. My hotels were very nice but, like all hotels, they didn’t provide as many TV stations as I get at home. Not that I had much time in the hotel, anyway—I hit the ground running first thing in the morning and didn’t get back until late in the evening. So much fun!

The hotel TVs started me thinking about which networks I wouldn’t want to live without. I thought this would be a fun game to play today at popculturedivas. If you could only have three TV networks, which ones would you choose? (For the sake of this game, let’s pretend that you can’t watch streaming TV on the computer, and you can’t get DVDs of your favorite TV shows.)

Susan Mallery’s Top Three TV Networks:

1.    Lifetime
Project Runway alone might be enough to make me choose Lifetime. I love that show so much that I created a character who was an aspiring fashion designer just to live out my Project Runway fantasies. (Megan in Sunset Bay, my first women’s fiction.) Now they’ve got Models of the Runway, too – so viewers get to gossip about the pretty, bitchy women. Love it!

But of course, I also love the movies. How great would it be if they wanted to turn one of my books into a Lifetime movie?! Or they could create a lighthearted, romantic TV series based on Fool’s Gold, the town with the man shortage. (Any producers out there? Take a look at www.foolsgoldca.com to learn more about this fabulous wine country town. This series would appeal to fans of The Gilmore Girls… and there are a lot of us!)

2.    HGTV
Hello – House Hunters? Who can resist that? Every episode is a complete story. A beginning, a middle… always some suspense, and always a happy ending! And House Hunters International teaches you a little bit about the world, too, so it’s delicious and nutritious. Plus, they give away the Dream Home every year. I’m still a little bitter that I haven’t won yet, but I’ll forgive them when they hand over the keys next year.

3.    ABC
Yes, for my third choice, I’m sticking with one of the Big Three. Surprised even myself. But when I stopped to think about it, I realized how many shows I love are on ABC. Castle with the yummy Nathan Fillion, Modern Family, Dancing with the Stars, Desperate Housewives, Good Morning America… I could go on and on, but you might start to judge me for watching wayyyyy too much TV.

Those are my three. I will miss Bravo, but I did say only three. Sigh.

What about you? Which three networks would you choose, and why? What are your favorite shows?

  1. Such a fun post Susan! Okay this is a tough one for me. ;) I think if I had to narrow it down to 3 networks it would be: Sundance Channel because of the great indie movies and docs. Food Network (what can I say - every food show has a happy ending!) And BBC Canada because of all the cool Brit imports (MI-5/Spooks starring Richard Armitage is at the top of my list!). Thanks so much for blogging with us today! Your new series sounds terrific! And I love the special web site you did for it! ;) Cheers!

  2. Thank you for having me here today, Joanna! LOL on the Food Network. You are soooo right - every food show does have a happy ending!

I'm glad you like the Fool's Gold website! Fool's Gold is the Land of Happy Endings... which is now making me think of food.

  3. I posted a link to this blog on my Facebook page, and we're getting a fun discussion going there, too. It's always fun for me to see how much I have in common with my readers!

  5. Hello Susan! Fun (and difficult) question. Hmm. I'm not a big TV watcher, but I love love love the Sundance Channel, BBC America and WITF, our local NPR affiliate. (Sshh, don't tell CBS, I used to work for that local affiliate). :)
Congrats on all your successes! And thanks for being a Diva for the Day.

  6. WE TV for Platimum Weddings, at the very top Castle and then BRAVO for Housewives of NJ.

  7. Cate, Is NPR on TV? How come I never knew that? I love NPR!!!

  8. Hi, Marilyn! You know I love those Housewives. Such drama! Such passion! And of course, Castle has the wonderful Nathan Fillion. Someone suggested that his costar, Stana Katic, would make a good Dana in the movie version of HOT ON HER HEELS. I agree! She'd be fab.

  9. Antiques Roadshow is one of my favorite shows. Love it! Even if I've seen the episode before, it's fun. I especially love at the end, when they let people who didn't make it onto the show talk about what they found out about their stuff. Always makes me laugh.

  10. hi Susan! Very fun to see you over here! Oh, man, I am pathetic with TV these days--can't find enough time in which to watch it! I do have my regular shows--So You Think You Can Dance (it starts in a few weeks!!!), American Idol (I'm so over it--it's past its prime), Modern Family (Best show on TV), Cougar Town. Throw in Amazing Race for good measure...My kids trawl cable and network and I just get antsy when they have a bazillion different channels on--am very content when they keep it on the Food Network!

  11. Hi Susan
Love your books. Fun topic today. This is an easy one.
HGTV :: We watch House Hunters, too! Even the international ones.

Food Network :: I love those baking competitions and Chef Ramsey, too. You have to have a little food porn each day to make your day complete. Truth be told, sometimes the food channel is the closest I get to a kitchen in a day. I kind of like it that way!

Lifetime Movie :: When I'm traveling there's nothing better than a room service meal in front of Lifetime Movie Network.

Good old standard stations:: Who doesn't love Castle. Are those sweet daddy-daughter moments to die for??

I have to peek out from behind my reality tv shield and admit Survivor is a fav of mine, so no cable or satellite required and do NOT call my house on Thursday from 8-9 eastern ;).

Here's to Chasing Perfect ... may we all catch him!

  12. Jenny, Fun to see you here, too! I love Modern Family! It's just warped enough. ;)

  13. Oh, and yes, I agree that American Idol is past its prime. However, I enjoy watching it more than ever this year because I discovered the thrill of tweeting while watching the show. It's so cool! A bunch of new girlfriends and I dish about the contestants and the judges while the show is airing live. Too fun!

  14. Hi, Nancy! Thanks for the sweet compliment.

You've listed a lot of my favorites. And no need to hide behind your reality shield with me... I love reality TV, too. I am so into all the drama. Even when the show is staged, the emotion is real and so compelling.

  15. Lifetime is a great choice, I agree, and HGTV too, but I have to put NBC on there because they have good shows, and my favorite is Biggest Loser!!!!!

  16. Ellen, the Biggest Loser is so inspiring, isn't it?! I get tired just watching the contestants exercise. They're amazing!

  17. What a fun post! And Househunters it is for me - so hooked on that show. Have moved around so much and still can't decide where to go next. I'd like to see a version where somebody has to choose between cities - lol!

    ReplyDelete
  18. PS - Not just cities, but different states - completely different parts of the country. :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ooooooh, Kathy! That would be fun. I can so relate to what you're saying. I have moved more times than I can count. Good thing my job is mobile!

  22. Tough question! I love ABC, I guess, because of Castle, LOST, Grey's and The Middle. CW has Supernatural, my all-time favorite show. Number three--I guess USA, because of Burn Notice and Psych.

  23. I'm with Joanna on BBC Canada - can't live without it. Gotta have PBS, and definitely need HBO.

Hope your fictional town gets noticed by a savvy producer, Susan!
