Book Review: INDEFENSIBLE by Pam Callow

by Kelly Boyce

I haven’t done a book review in a while but this one is worth the shout out. INDEFENSIBLE is Pamela Callow’s latest release in the Kate Lange series (MIRA).

In her debut novel, DAMAGED, we found Kate battling it out with the Body Butcher, a serial killer with a nasty habit of leaving bodies in less than pristine condition.

I loved the taught thrill fest that was DAMAGED. If you haven’t checked it out, by all means do – you won’t be disappointed. Just take a gander at the book trailer at the bottom of this post if you doubt me.

The great thing about INDEFENSIBLE was the emotional intensity brought to bear by the nature of story. It brings back several of the characters you met in her debut and then adds a few more layers by introducing new ones. My personal favourite is Eddie Bent, a lawyer who has seen better days, both personally and professionally.

But what I loved most about INDEFENSIBLE was how much Callow made you care about the victim, who, although only in the book for a very brief period, was vividly realistic as the spurned ex-wife of Randall Barrett. The book takes a hard look at a domestic situation gone horribly wrong and the fall-out such an event can have.

Here’s the blurb from the website:

INDEFENSIBLE:
Their mother is dead. Their father is charged with her murder. Held in prison for the murder of his ex-wife, Randall Barrett is shunned by his partners and friends. His defense lies in the hands of the one person who knows too well the taint of criminal scandal: Kate Lange. As Kate races to stay a step ahead of the prosecution, a silent predator is waiting for the perfect time to deal the final blow.

The book is released December 28th, 2010. What better way to cap off the year than to curl up with a great book like INDEFENSIBLE?

Now here's the awesome trailer for DAMAGED for your viewing pleasure. Happy holidays everyone!

  4. I loved both DAMAGED and INDEFENSIBLE. I really liked Elise! I was actually quite sad when she died. I don't generally empathize or sympathize with unfaithful people or characters, but somehow I did with her. A testament to great character writing...

  5. I love Dickensian character names like Eddie Bent, Pam. How cool is that for your editor to love him as one of her favorite characters! I'm thinking she's encountered quite a few, over the years...

  6. I loved "Indefensible" too, Kelly. Stayed up way too late reading it. All the characters were multi-dimensional and I was flipping pages as I followed Kate. What a great apres Christmas present for those relaxing vacation days when you have time to curl up with chocolate and a good book. Congratulations, Pam!
