I Like My Vampires to Look Like Rufus Sewell

by Julia Phillips Smith

As the author of a return to traditional vampires in my Dark Ages tale, SAINT SANGUINUS, you can imagine how much I'm looking forward to Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.

It's not merely because these vampires are just the kind I adore.

I'm a huge fan of director Timur Bekmambetov.

If you don't know his work, check out this Russian double bill:

Just as President Lincoln hid his secret vampire-hunting life from history, post-cold-war Russia hides its secret battle between the Light Others and Dark Others in the urban fantasy series Night Watch and Day Watch.

Here is a fan-made video featuring Day Watch:

And don't forget Bekmambetov's Hollywood debut, Wanted with James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie.

Can't get enough of this director's fluid visual-action-sequence style, his tormented-hero origin stories and the way his heroes aren't exactly shiny. I so prefer gray characters who act like real people.

Even when they bend the rules of time and space.

  1. Complex characters are the most interesting - like those in Wanted. Great movie. Great post.
