National Lazy Day by Alison Bruce

"Progress isn’t made by early risers. It’s made by lazy men trying to find easier ways to do something."
– Robert A. Heinlein

One of my favourite books by Robert Heinlein is Time Enough for Love. As novels go, it's got issues. Is it a novel or a collection of connected stories? Whatever. One of my favourite stories is in the book: The Tale of the Man Too Lazy to Fail.

David Lamb avoids farm work by going to school and a real job by joining the Navy. Whenever he gets in trouble, he finds the easy way out and it turns out to be best for everyone. Sometimes what is easy for Lamb isn't easy for the average guy, but that doesn't matter. The moral of the tale is to find the easy way for yourself.

For me, that's writing. I have a cousin who shies away from writing anything longer than a thank you note but can balance accounts with ease. That's a chore to me. So is gardening. But how many people do you know who love to garden for relaxation?

I'd rather be writing. Or reading...

Lazarus Long 1916-4272
The capstone and crowning achievement of Heinlein's famous Future History, Time Enough for Love follows Lazarus Long through a vast and magnificent timescape of centuries and worlds. Heinlein's longest and most ambitious work, it is the story of a man so in love with Life that he refused to stop living it; and so in love with Time that he became his own ancestor.
