OUR REVOLVING BOOK WEEK SPOTLIGHT ON DeAnn Smallwood wraps up with the poignant contemporary western: TEARS IN THE WIND.
SYNOPSIS:
Leanna turns her back on the fresh grave of her husband, Leon, and heads to her car, to leave Colorado in search of a new life. She has bittersweet memories of her married life, particularly those years she and Leon spent developing and working a small Colorado ranch. Once they were forced from their spread, by wealthy, powerful speculators, Leon lost all sense of promise, and became increasingly depressed as the months passed. Leanna is unable to bring Leon back to a belief in himself and the future.
Leanna carries the secret of her husband's death while working steadily for a year in a small law firm in Wyoming. Was Leon's death an accident? He'd driven the mountain road many times before and was always a cautious driver. Did she make a mistake in not letting him see her pain in losing their ranch. Was her desire to shield him from even more hurt wrong? And the biggest question of all, did he think he'd lost her, too? These thoughts torture Leanna. She is content with her new life, but it is also clear she has a cold reserve and that she keeps her distance from loving anyone again.
Then Matt Forrister enters the law office where Leanna is a para-legal. He is everything Leanna has come to fear and loathe. He is wealthy and good-looking and owns one of the biggest ranches in the area. He is also her bosses friend. She immediately despises this man, yet, at the same time, she feels an overwhelming attraction to him. She can't help but put him in the same category as the wealthy and powerful speculators that forced her from her ranch. Matt is puzzled, angered, and mesmerized by Leanna. He is drawn to her stunning beauty. He is attracted to her spirit. Thoughts of Leanna run like electricity through him.
Matt and Leanna's boss conspire to bring Leanna to Matt's ranch, the Lazy Seven, nestled in the Big Horn Mountains outside of Sheridan, Wyoming. In spite of her conflicting emotions, Leanna is swept into the beauty of everything. She beholds the vision of the dream she and Leon shared so hopelessly. The beautiful horses, the ranch, the man. Still, Leanna holds back frightened by the prospect of falling for a man who seems to mirror everything she had come to hate. The volatile mix of restraint and passion guides both Matt and Leanna through the chapters that follow. Leanna comes to appreciate and trust the hardworking rancher, the passionate and caring man, who has never known the true love of a woman. Matt loves Leanna deeply.
Leanna returns to Colorado and once again faces the heartbreak and rush of memories. She faces Leon's grave and seeks his understanding and forgiveness. She returns to "Sheridan and Matt, exhausted from grief and rekindled memory, but beginning to heal. Leanna faces Matt, opens her heart and tells him her reason for her deep sense of shame and fear. They face one another, open and unafraid, clear about their desires and love.
